About the Registration Process

Registering on eBay is easy and free. The registration process includes just a few simple steps:

Step 1: Enter your contact and personal information

Your contact information includes your name, address and phone number. Personal information includes your date of birth, which is required to verify that you are over 18 years of age.

Step 2: Enter your email address

You need to enter an email address that you can check immediately because eBay will send you an email that contains instructions on how to complete the registration.Important: Having a working email account is especially important on eBay because email is used to notify you when you've won an item and to find out postage and payment options from other buyers and sellers.

Step 3: Read and accept the eBay User Agreement and Privacy Policy

You must accept the agreement to continue registering. Learn more about the User Agreement and Privacy Policy.

Step 4: Choose a user ID, password and a secret question

You'll use your User ID and password every time you sign in to eBay. Learn more about Choosing a User ID. If you forget your password, eBay will ask you this secret question to verify your identity before providing your password.

Step 5: Check your email

You will need to check your email for a registration email from eBay and follow the instructions in the email to confirm your registration and complete the registration process.

If having trouble with Sign-In, first make sure that your Caps Lock key is off then try signing in again.

If your sign-in information is not valid, do one or both of the following:

  • Ask eBay to send your user ID to your email address.
  • Ask eBay to send your password to your email address.

Note: eBay will send you information to the email address associated with your member account. You should receive a response within 24 hours, depending on your email system

If the page cannot be displayed, try signing in again. If you still receive the message, try the following:

  • Make sure your browser is up to date. eBay uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology, which may not be supported by an older browser. You may need to upgrade your browser in order to sign in to eBay.
  • Try deleting (clearing) your cookies and your browser's cache (also called temporary internet files). Note: Cookies are small files placed on the hard drive of your computer, which eBay uses to provide you with services.

If you've given confidential information through a spoof website, or think someone has tried to get into your eBay account, don't worry - there are a number of things you can do to protect yourself.

First of all, if there's anyone who uses your account with your permission, check to make sure it wasn't them who made the changes. You'll then need to change the password on your personal email account. If someone has unauthorised access to your email account, they may be able to get into your eBay account. Make sure the password on your email account is different from the password you use on eBay.

If you believe that your account has been compromised, contact us immediately.

Make sure you've changed your email password so that your email account is secured. We'll look into your eBay account and if it has been compromised, we'll work with you to make it secure again. We'll ask you to change your password - not give us your password - and if necessary, put your account on hold until we're able to make it secure.

Become part of the vigilant community by forwarding suspicious email tospoof@ebay.co.uk or spoof@ebay.ie

One of the biggest threats to the security of your eBay account and your identity is fraudulent email and websites, called 'spoof email' and 'spoof websites'. Both are used to get personal and account information. To help protect its members against this threat, we adopted a comprehensive strategy.

If you receive email that includes links and requests sensitive information - be cautious

A spoof email pretending to be from eBay typically contains a link that takes you to a fake website that requests that you sign in and submit personal and account information.

eBay does not require you to enter information on a page that cannot be accessed from the eBay site. When possible, you should avoid clicking links. Instead of clicking the link, you should copy the address and paste it into the address bar area of your web browser. While eBay may send email that contains links, the links are provided for convenience only. You will not be required to submit sensitive information if a direct link is provided to an eBay page.

If eBay requests information from you, a copy of that email will be in the My Messages box in MyeBay. You can submit the requested information using My eBay. eBay does not send you email that includes attachments, or ask you for your password or other confidential information through email.

Become part of the vigilant community by forwarding suspicious email to spoof@ebay.co.uk or spoof@ebay.ie. If you need more help, contact us.

We use a number of techniques to protect your account from unauthorized access. One way is by checking whether you're using one of your usual computers to access your account.

If you're using a different computer than usual -- for example, at the office or at a friend's house - sometimes we'll require some additional verification before you can buy an item.

To help us quickly and easily confirm your identity, we suggest you:

Check that your personal information is current. We might need to verify the personal information in your account, such as your telephone number or address.

Provide a secondary phone number. We strongly suggest you provide a cell phone number, so we can reach you while you're on the go.

Review your secret question. Make sure your secret question and answer are easy for you to remember, but difficult for others to guess.
